Wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Diwali. And a safe one.
Diwali, as I have known since childhood, is a festival of light which spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. The firecrackers are meant to brighten the sky which has been left dark because of the absence of the moon.
For me, Diwali is about living up to the phase "God helps those who help themselves." On this day, people try to brighten up the sky and scare away evil and darkness form their lives. So, what exactly is the harm is bursting firecrackers for just one or two days in a year?!
It is easy to take a fish out of the water but not to take water out of the fish. Implementation of rules are very easy but to make people forget their culture and their beliefs is not easy. Nor is it right. Just like the world looks more beautiful when it is clean, it also looks more beautiful when it is full of light coming from a different source than electricity!
The pledge of celebrating a silent and pollution free Diwali is just too naive for me. A clean road will not turn the pain of being raped on the streets, to pleasure. A pollution free morning air will not lessen the shame one feels to see a traffic police take bribes from the truck drivers early in the morning. A greener India will not help the Indians feel proud of the same soldiers who protect the country are the ones who rape the village girls.
What can be controlled are the practices which have no relation to the religious beliefs. Like the loud music played at pandals, the food stalls using the road as their dust bin, the desperate people taking advantage of the crowd to steal or to molest.
I don't believe in what others want to do. I don't care about what others think about me. I don't care about what is going to happen. I care about living the culture I have been brought up in. Living the life God has permitted me. Fighting against the evil and not to be bothered if I lose a few times, because it is only meant for me to grow. Living up to the love I get.
I am definitely celebrating Diwali with diyas and candles and firecrackers. Are you?
